The initiatives created by the pilot cities in the City Development Strategy and City Without Slums programs are presented with vivid on-the-ground examples in this retrospective look at these programs. Detailed plans formulated by cities around Asia--including Manila, Da Nang in Vietnam, and Calicut in India--are explained in terms of their objectives for alleviating poverty and upgrading deprived low-income settlements on a citywide scale. An analysis is provided of past lessons learned in combating the development of urban slums with suggestions for the future.
