In his elegant landscapes, Kawase Hasui presents a nostalgic view of rural Japan. Created during a time of rapid industrialization, his prints are focused on the natural environment. Intense blues and greens reflect the sea and the countryside, while fair skies and moonlit nights temper the mood. Hasui worked in watercolor, and his sketches were transformed into woodblock prints by a skilled team at the studio of publisher Watanabe ShAÂzaburAÂ. One of the most prolific artists of the shin hangamovement, Hasui produced over 600 artworks. Twelve quiet scenes are on display in this calendar.
